Men's Health SA Illustrations

An amazing brief found its way to me last year in the form of illustrating a map of South Africa as well as some spot illustrations on unusual activities to do on a summer break or vacation in South Africa for the Men's Health South Africa November 2014 issue.

The full illustration. The spot illustrations refer to Orange River rafting at the Gorge, tracking big game at the Addo Elephant National Park, the Green Mountain Eco Route (a hike and bike route near Botrivier), rock climbing at Waterval Boven and the annual 4 Peaks mountain race in Moolmanshoek.

The map is a very stylised representation of South Africa and depicts some of the mountains, vegetation and desert areas found in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela Day | 18 July 2014

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”
~ NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA (18 JULY 1918 - 5 DECEMBER 2013)

In honour of Nelson Mandela Day, following is a collection of all things Madiba!

Nelson Mandela Day Google Doodle
Google doodler Katy Wu has really outdone herself with this beautifully illustrated tribute of the legacy of Nelson Mandela! A fascinating look at her process in illustrating the doodle can be found here.

Tribute to Nelson Mandela
As you drive along the highway into Cape Town, you won't be able to miss the huge portrait of a smiling Madiba! Commissioned by the City of Cape Town and Dreamfuel, Linsey Levendall created an amazing tribute to the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

U2's Ordinary Love music video
I really love U2's Ordinary Love music video, which was written for the movie "Mandela : Long Walk to Freedom". It features beautiful lettering by Oliver Jeffers and also features the talents of Mac Premo. Inspiring stuff!

Bright Night piece for .M Contemporary Gallery

What an incredible honour it was to be invited along with my other fellow Alexander Bander's and amazingly talented high profile South African illustrators to create a one-off print for the .M Contemporary group exhibition, "The Path Less Deconstructed" in Sydney, Australia, running from the 14th December 2013 to 1st February 2014.

It is just incredible to think that a piece I created here in Cape Town, South Africa is not even on the same continent but elsewhere in the world!

Following is the piece I created, some detail shots as well as an artist's statement on what the piece is about - I hope you like!

For the topic of “ The Path Less Deconstructed”, I looked to that which inspires me most in my work and my analytical albeit playful nature, namely the city at night. I am fascinated by the architecture that can be found in my city: a contrasting mix of sleek modern and 18th century decorative buildings juxtaposed alongside each other, especially the patterns of windows, façade details and building shapes that become starker after dusk. At night in the city, there is an unspoken air of excitement – the feeling that the evening could take you on an adventure anywhere, never quite knowing what you may discover along the way. I see the city as a playground with the carousel as its whimsical heartbeat, the symbol of childhood dreams that never quite leave you; a place to be explored and re-explored, a place of great excitement, of intersecting lives and unlimited possibility. It is at night in the city that I feel most alive and most at home.

Some detail shots

Some pictures of the piece up at .M Contemporary

Many thanks to Emma Cook heading up Alexander's Band and .M Contemporary for organising such an amazing opportunity!

Red Bull Collective Art Project

Recently, I took part in the Red Bull Collective Art project , in which creatives could choose a time slot and were given a limited hour or so to upload a piece that followed on from the previous creative's submission. This is my submission - it followed on from a piece entitled "Geometric World" by Dennis Sander. I was inspired to use simple, graphic shapes and incorporate a blue and red colour to hint at the Red Bull brand. I also tried to let the unique place I live in also inspire the piece, namely Cape Town, South Africa.
