Hello Tunisia!

Hello Mauritius!

When I was a kid I used to collect stamps. (Such a nerd right?) I loved that you could learn so much about a place through stamps - I would often go and research the different and exotic places that I saw. I still have a stamp book full of the stamps I collected! Recently it's also been so lovely being part of the Postcrossing community and receiving and exchanging postcards from all over the world! Always so interesting to see different countries' stamps!

So this is my first stab at a postage stamp. 

For me nothing quite says "Mauritius" like the Dodo bird especially as it was the only known habitat of the bird! The Dodo was first spotted by Dutch settlers when they arrived in Mauritius in 1598 and it was hunted to extinction in 1662.

I'm thinking of trying an even more limited colour palette too, possibly even it being completely linework. What do you think?

Essie Artist's Almanac 2015

Happy warm greetings from an overcast Cape Town! It should be Summer already but it's feeling a little bit more like Winter today. I thought I'd get back to posting again and what better post to share first than an illustration I created ages ago for the month of June (hello Winter!) for this year's Essie's Artist's Almanac.

What an amazing honour it was to be included alongside the likes of Radio, Dylan Jones, Pearly Yon and Ben Johnston!

Men's Health SA Illustrations

An amazing brief found its way to me last year in the form of illustrating a map of South Africa as well as some spot illustrations on unusual activities to do on a summer break or vacation in South Africa for the Men's Health South Africa November 2014 issue.

The full illustration. The spot illustrations refer to Orange River rafting at the Gorge, tracking big game at the Addo Elephant National Park, the Green Mountain Eco Route (a hike and bike route near Botrivier), rock climbing at Waterval Boven and the annual 4 Peaks mountain race in Moolmanshoek.

The map is a very stylised representation of South Africa and depicts some of the mountains, vegetation and desert areas found in South Africa.

Puzzle Illustration

So this is a project I meant to share a while ago - I was approached to create a custom illustration for an educational puzzle for a Canadian company!

It was such a blast working on this! Here are some close-up details:

When I was a kid I used to draw a crown on every character I scribbled. Even worms got teeny tiny crowns placed on their noggins! Illustration for a project that didn't go ahead.

Bright Night piece for .M Contemporary Gallery

What an incredible honour it was to be invited along with my other fellow Alexander Bander's and amazingly talented high profile South African illustrators to create a one-off print for the .M Contemporary group exhibition, "The Path Less Deconstructed" in Sydney, Australia, running from the 14th December 2013 to 1st February 2014. 

It is just incredible to think that a piece I created here in Cape Town, South Africa is not even on the same continent but elsewhere in the world!

Following is the piece I created, some detail shots as well as an artist's statement on what the piece is about - I hope you like!

For the topic of “ The Path Less Deconstructed”, I looked to that which inspires me most in my work and my analytical albeit playful nature, namely the city at night. I am fascinated by the architecture that can be found in my city: a contrasting mix of sleek modern and 18th century decorative buildings juxtaposed alongside each other, especially the patterns of windows, façade details and building shapes that become starker after dusk. At night in the city, there is an unspoken air of excitement – the feeling that the evening could take you on an adventure anywhere, never quite knowing what you may discover along the way. I see the city as a playground with the carousel as its whimsical heartbeat, the symbol of childhood dreams that never quite leave you; a place to be explored and re-explored, a place of great excitement, of intersecting lives and unlimited possibility. It is at night in the city that I feel most alive and most at home.
